There are many benefits in remodeling your bathroom such as improved comfort, aesthetics, safety, and increasing the value of your home.
According to data from Zillow, a bathroom remodel will increase your home’s value by $1.71 for every $1 you spend and can help attract more buyers. A typical average return on investment is 50 to 80 percent.
In the most recent National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) survey for 2022, U.S. homeowners paid a contractor on the low end an average of about $11,300 and the high end $32,000 on a master bath remodel and $5,800 on a secondary bath remodel. However, many people spend far less and some people spend a lot more on their projects. The NKBA recommends spending between 5% and 10% of your home’s value for a bathroom remodel.
Please keep in mind as you read these stats, there are several factors that will determine the final costs such as the size of the bathroom, area of the country, the extent of the remodel and the fixtures and products you choose.
For example, here in San Diego and Riverside Counties due to the high cost of living, rising construction wages, product costs, and the extreme demand for contractor services, you can expect to pay on the higher end. Also, since 2021, there has been a huge labor shortage due to the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation has caused the cost of materials and products to skyrocket.
One of the biggest factors that will determine how much you will have to spend is the size of your bathroom and your budget. For example, a master bathroom remodel is nearly twice the cost of remodeling a small bathroom.
The national average cost of a small or secondary bathroom remodel is about $4,000 – $8,000 and $10,000 to $20,000 and higher for a standard-size room.
Larger master bathrooms will cost approximately $20,000 – $35,000 to as high as $70,000 and higher, depending on how much of the room you plan to change and the fixtures and materials you decide upon.
As you can see, these numbers are all over the place. You really cannot determine an exact price until you have a local contractor give you an estimate but at least you have a general idea of the costs.
Now, let’s go over the various sections of a bathroom remodel so you understand where the money is going and can decide which is the best route to take based on what you would like done and your available funds.
Shower and Tub
The most expensive part of any bathroom remodel is going to be a new shower and tub if you choose to start over from scratch.
On the low end, you can expect to spend approximately $3,000-$4,500 for a fiberglass shower and tub installed by a contractor. On the higher end, a shower and tub combination with tile will cost anywhere from $8,000 to as much as $15,000 and higher depending on the size and type of tile and design you choose.
Vanity and Sink
The vanity and the sink plus installation by a contractor in Southern California will cost between $1,500 and $5,800 or more on the high end depending on the design, fixtures, size, etc.
Flooring costs are largely determined by the size of the room and the type of material you plan to use such as tile or vinyl. The average cost for material and installation is between $15.33 and $39.43 per square foot
The cost of having a contractor paint a bathroom is $1,200 to $2,500.
When you remodel a bathroom, the old shower, tub, vanity, and flooring will have to be taken out via what is called demolition (demo). This will cost approximately $1,500 to $3,500.
